Flag Retirement

Presentation of the Colors by Local Scouts at Elks Lodge #2477

Honoring the American Flag

Once a year the Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge #2477 carry on a twelve year tradition by conducting a respectful American Flag Retirement Ceremony.

Each year the public is invited to drop off their unserviceable Flags and be a part of the ceremony.

Flags that are worn and torn are cremated with the same dignity and respect we would bestow upon a loved one who has nurtured us and passed away.

The ceremony includes the Scouts who present the Colors and along with a presentation regarding the history of the many flags that have served this country there is an invocation before the Elks Officers retire the Flags. Helping to instill patriotism in our youth, the Lodge sponsors Boy Scout, Girl Scout, Brownie Scout, and Cub Scout units who assist in their own ritual of cutting away one stripe at a time and with a patriotic message place each stripe in the fire. The last act is the placement of the Blue field of Stars to finalize the ritual.

All in all, the day is served by a very inspiring ceremony.

If you have a flag that has become tattered over time please consider giving it a proper retirement. Feel free to call the lodge if you would like us to take care of it for you.
