Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge Hosts a Flag Retirement with Local Scouts

On Sunday November 17th 2013 Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge #2477 hosted a flag retirement ceremony with the assistance of local Boy Scout Troops, Cub Scout Dens and Girl Scout Troops.  This honorable event was presented with reverence and respect for Old Glory.  Thanks go out to Bill Miller, Lodge Scouting Chairman, and Bill Sternberg for organizing the event with flags of various periods in our Nations history.  The images below highlight the event.

A Special Thanks from the PER BBQ Team

On Saturday June 29th it was hot.  I mean Africa Hot.  Things were looking grim during the Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge BBQ.  The PERs were being challenged once again.   As the day progressed, the heat was taking it’s toll.  Finally, we were fortunate to see two very prominent, and experienced, BBQ Elks descend upon the scene.

Rick Bennett and Eddie Rice stepped up to the plate (or Grill as the case may be) and supported the PER effort without blinking an eye.  These gentlemen are very familiar with the need for BBQ volunteers.

Although our team was staffed adequately, when the heat kicked in it soon became a struggle.  Eddie and Rick immediately made the obvious observation and jumped in to support the PER team.

Eddie and Rick, your dedication to the mainstay of the Lodge and to fellow Elks is inspiring.  Thanks again for your efforts.

The Past Exalted Ruler’s Association is deeply grateful.

Pack 3776 Blue & Gold Dinner

The following is from our Scouting Chairman Bill Miller.  Well done Bill and well done parents and leaders….

On Sunday, February 24th, one of our sponsored Cub Packs – 3776 – held their Blue and Gold dinner at the Lodge.  The Pack has grown to its largest size since the beginning of our association with them about 8 years ago.  The Lodge Room was full to overflowing (I counted over 120 people) as awards were given out to the cubs and a slide show broadcast a reminder of all the activities that were shared during the past year.  Blue and Gold events typically include the “bridging” of Webelos II Cubs into Scouting and this year the Pack sent 11 boys into Troop 765 and two more into Troop 745.  Although this depleted their ranks considerably, they still have 4 Tigers, 8 Wolves, 17 Bears and 3 Webelos I boys remaining and a bunch of eager moms and dads in their supporting cast.  Along with the “graduation” of the large number of Webelos several key adult leaders accompanied their sons into the Scouting troops, including the Scoutmaster, Fred Hall, the Committee Chair, Treasurer, and Advancement Chair.  However, replacements have volunteered to fill these slots and the Pack remains active, healthy and the kids seem to be having a good time.

A request from the Cal-Vet Home, Ventura to Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge #2477

A request has come to the Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge from the Cal Vet Home – Ventura for a flag retirement.

After the veterans brunch and flag retirement in November 2012, attended by some of the CalVets, the administration asked if we could share our ceremony with their residents.  The home in Saticoy, Ventura County, is a 60-bed facility for veterans over 62 years of age, and is run like a 4-star hotel with extras.  The staff goes all out to make the residents happy with their home.  It is a pleasure and honor that the administration was so taken by the Elks flag retirement ceremony as to ask for this favor, which we are happy and honored to provide.

On Sunday, February 24th, comencing at 1:00 pm, 10900 Telephone Rd. in Saticoy, a Viet Nam veterans group will provide a color guard for the ceremony.  This will be followed by the Elks honor to the flags of our country that have served their time flying over homes and facilities of our country.  Then, proceeding to the outside facility suitable for the burning of these flags, the flag retirement will commence with all veterans who wish to retire a flag coming to the circle of honor.

The only method of retirement of United States flags that is recognized by our government is through burning.  The Boy Scouts of America have developed one of the most recognizable ceremonies, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks follows a very similar service; both having been in effect for many years.  Please find the time to attend this ceremony in honor of our veterans and our flag.

In Elkdom,

Carl Lanterman
National Veterans Services Chairman,
Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge #2477

“So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will not forget them.”

The three handsome Elk Guys in the back row, viz., Jim Mullin, Dwight Williams and Bill Miller, are pictured with their GSA helpers at the annual Thousand Oaks Brownilympic event which was held at California Lutheran University on Saturday, May 19th.

The “boys” cooked nearly 400 hot dogs and the girls wrapped and delivered them to the many Brownie Troops or sold them to walk-up parent customers in attendance.  T.O. Lodge 2477 furnishes hot dogs for both the T.O GSA Service Unit Brownilympics and the Coastal SU’s which includes Newbury Park – this year held on the previous Saturday at the beautiful Rio Mesa HS facility in Oxnard.  A few hundred girls and a like number of parents participated at each site again this year in these always colorful and exciting events.

The “Wrapper” girls were great, keeping up a steady chatter and really pushing the output of the cookers.  When we had finished BBQing the last dog the girls gathered under a nearby large oak tree for their lunch and several yelled out that these were the best hot dogs they ever tasted.  A dad also came up to ask what brand we were cooking and when asked why, he said his 6 year old son wouldn’t eat hot dogs at home but had devoured two of them that morning!  We’ll credit the fresh air and physical activity for the added good taste.
