Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge PER Association Hosts another “WCCD ER Going Away Party”

It has been a long-time tradition to give the West Central Coast District Exalted Rulers a proper send off before traveling to Grand Lodge Convention.   In keeping with that tradition the Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge PER Association hosted yet another annual “ER Going Away Party”.
Because the venue for the 2013 Grand Lodge convention is Reno, Nevada, the theme for the party was a Casino Night.  Also, in the tradition of PER events, a horse race was held which involved the visiting ERs.

Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge conduct a Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Cal-Vet Home in Saticoy

The Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge #2477 conducted a flag retirement ceremony at the Cal-Vet Home in Saticoy several weeks ago.  This post was delayed in hopes of obtaining the names of resident participants which have to this date have not come forth.  This posting is to commemorate the gracious efforts on the part of our lodge members who conducted the ceremony in honor of the veteran residents of Cal-Vet, Saticoy and all veterans across our great country.  From our lodge:  Bill Sternberg, PER, Billy Sternberg, Barbara Gibs, ER Leo Rodriguez, Robert Jones and especially our Veteran Affairs Chairman Carl Lanterman.  Thanks goes out to 1st Lady Lynn Rodriguez for providing these photographs.

A request from the Cal-Vet Home, Ventura to Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge #2477

A request has come to the Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge from the Cal Vet Home – Ventura for a flag retirement.

After the veterans brunch and flag retirement in November 2012, attended by some of the CalVets, the administration asked if we could share our ceremony with their residents.  The home in Saticoy, Ventura County, is a 60-bed facility for veterans over 62 years of age, and is run like a 4-star hotel with extras.  The staff goes all out to make the residents happy with their home.  It is a pleasure and honor that the administration was so taken by the Elks flag retirement ceremony as to ask for this favor, which we are happy and honored to provide.

On Sunday, February 24th, comencing at 1:00 pm, 10900 Telephone Rd. in Saticoy, a Viet Nam veterans group will provide a color guard for the ceremony.  This will be followed by the Elks honor to the flags of our country that have served their time flying over homes and facilities of our country.  Then, proceeding to the outside facility suitable for the burning of these flags, the flag retirement will commence with all veterans who wish to retire a flag coming to the circle of honor.

The only method of retirement of United States flags that is recognized by our government is through burning.  The Boy Scouts of America have developed one of the most recognizable ceremonies, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks follows a very similar service; both having been in effect for many years.  Please find the time to attend this ceremony in honor of our veterans and our flag.

In Elkdom,

Carl Lanterman
National Veterans Services Chairman,
Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge #2477

“So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will not forget them.”
