Elks 2477 Welcomes New Trustee Dan Martyn

With the resignation last evening of our 3 Year Trustee, Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge was pleased to find that the vacancy was quickly filled with an able and willing candidate. Nominated by member Dick McCann, Dan Martyn was voted in as our newest trustee.

Dan has been a familiar face at the lodge for some time as a guitarist for One Last Dance Band here in Southern California. Moreover, he can also be seen working for Ed and Ken on the Cutups BBQ team 2x per month.  In his words, “You can recognize me by the combined smell of smoke and dead meat.”

A lawyer with Danner & Martyn, L.L.P., we are grateful that he brings a new energy and perspective to our Board of Trustees in addition to a high level of continued support for the lodge and the Order.

Be sure to share your appreciation the next time you see him at the lodge.

New Look to Weekly Updates

The Passing of Brothers Ted Lipka and Steve Gettleman

Theodore Leon Lipka was known as "Ted" to his friends. Born July 29, 1946 in New Egypt, New Jersey, Ted was initiated into our order at the Whittier Lodge #1258 August 6, 1980. Ted took a demit to our lodge January 26, 1984 during the time that John Nau was the Exalted Ruler and proceeded to join the officer corps as our Lecturing Knight in Elk year 85-86. Skipping over the position of Loyal Knight he then moved up to Leading Knight and became our Exalted Ruler in 1988-1989. Taking a very short break Ted then got back into the officer corps and completed the chairs assuming the Loyal Knight position in 1991-92 and was our Officer at large in year 93-94. By profession Ted Lipka was a Deputy Sheriff and moved to Las Vegas in March of 2004. Ted passed away December 21, 2010.

Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge will miss our two brothers.

GettlemanSteve Gettleman

Steve Gettleman was born July 13, 1943. He joined the US Air Force after high school where he was stationed at Hahn Air Base, West Germany, with the "Home of the 50th Air Police, K-9 Section" in the early 1960s. Steve joined our lodge on January 27, 1987 and took a Demit to Canoga Park lodge #2190 in 1991. He later was reinstated into our lodge in 2002 then moved up to Paso Robles and became an associate member of Paso Robles. Steve kept his ties here at our lodge and in January 2006, when he heard of the need for a new log splitter for our BBQ team, he sent down a cashiers check for $350.00 to get the fund started. Steve passed away on Dec. 4, 2010 in Thousand Oaks.

 

“The clock of their day has stopped and across its dial motionless shadows mark the hour of eleven. With us, the golden hour of recollection.”

We shall meet, but we shall miss him,
There will be the vacant chair,
But though we no more possess him,
Still our hearts his memory bear,
But a while ago we gathered,
Friendship beaming in each eye,
Now the golden cord is severed,
He has passed to realms on high.

“There but for the grace of God…..” How often do we say this when we are faced with some ones else’s adversity and breath a sigh of relief that it is not us.

You are driving your car and come to a stop sign and see a poor creature with a sign that says “lost my job, lost my house, am homeless…..” Do you feel repulsed and drive away or do you throw a buck out the window, feel better and say “There but for the grace of God…..”

Go by Manna and see people less fortunate than ourselves and say I feel better because I had a hand and helped. The next time you attend a meeting we will pass the hat for Manna and you can leave a buck or a can of food and you can feel better by saying to yourself “There but for the grace of God…..”

Back in the saddle again

January 5, 2011 our first meeting back for the new year and we started with a full plate! In addition to several awards we had 2 Vacant Chairs (more on those later). Reports from committees such as the Christmas Tree Lot, Charity Baskets, Veteran’s activities,  Membership, Scouting (our 61st Eagle Scout will be honored later this month), Americanism and Scholarships (40 submitted this year and the District judging is this Sunday) and more highlighted all of the efforts going on behind the scenes.

The awards that were presented included Dick McCann receiving an Americanism award presented to those who fly their flag 24 hours a day and you see him pictured here with our Americanism Chair, Grant Thistle.

The second series of awards were presented to members present who had donated specific amounts to CHEA’s Major Project. Those pictured were FR: PER David Naccarato,  Heather Poliskey and Steve Finnerty BR: PDDGER Greg Metzgus, Kira Wagner, PER Bill Sternberg, ER Harry Brockwell and Jon Anderson. 

The third award, 1st Place Division II Website went to Kira and Paul Wagner for their work as the webmasters for our site.

Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge Welcomes 2011

New Year’s Eve celebrations are held around the world…it’s tradition. Each new year holds a promise of new beginnings filled with the hope of a better tomorrow, New Year’s resolutions abound and hardships of yesterday are put to rest. This year was no exception for the Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge #2477. With over 80 in attendance, family and friends gathered at the lodge to usher in the new year.

With a prime rib dinner, live music and plenty of laughter, 2011 is off to a great start. Enjoy a few of the moments captured on screen below.

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree

Every December the Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge organizes, manages and facilitates the , and for the last several years it has been in conjunction with Carlson’s Building Center on Thousand Oaks Blvd. This year was no exception. Over 500 trees were delivered and it took MANY hands to put it all together. The Christmas Tree Lot provides funds for a number of our charities through out the year with the primary one being the Charity Baskets.

More on the Charity Baskets

The planning, organization and manpower that is needed to deliver the Charity Baskets each year never ceases to amaze me. This year we made 97 deliveries, our highest count to date.

The immediate preparations are a week long starting with the room set up on Monday, food pick-up and delivery from several different sources, gift wrapping and the boxing up of each families items with the actual deliver on Saturday morning and then the room needs to be restored to it’s “normal” conditionSmile. However, the raising funds starts early in the year and the toy collection officially starts the first part of December.

The many hands that come together, from seasoned members to first timers, as well as their families, make the job something that everyone can enjoy and helps us all really get into the spirit of Christmas.

In the pictures taken by Jerry Serota and Paul Wagner you will see the lodge room as it is transformed into a “store” as well as the delivery this year…that even the rain couldn’t impede!
