Elks Care, Elks Share

With 1.2 million members in almost 2,200 lodges across the country, the BPO Elks are one of the largest and most active fraternal organizations in the world!

The BPO Elks is committed to the ideals of charity and patriotism. To
that end, Elks have now disbursed over the Order’s 100+ years more
than 3 billion dollars in cash, goods, and services to the nation’s youth,
its veterans, the disadvantaged and handicapped, and in support of patriotic
and civic programs. In the last fiscal year alone, the BPO Elks
expended in such fashion over $130 million, and the Order ranks as one
of the largest private providers of college scholarships in the nation.

Our lodge, #2477, is located in Thousand Oaks, and serves Newbury Park, Westlake Village, Agoura Hills and Thousand Oaks.

The moving spirit for the Elks

It All Began With the Jolly Corks.

Starting as as a group of actors and entertainers bent on having fun AND avoiding a New York Excise tax in 1867 (Sundays were the 'dry' day), this convivial group called themselves the Jolly Corks (for a clever trick with corks they performed on the uninitiated to win rounds of drinks).

That same year as membership grew, some members wished to become a more benevolent and protective society. Two feuding factions split the group with different philosophies...and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was shortly thereafter chartered in 1868 with a new spirit and direction.
